Woz-U: A New Education Platform

Steve Wozniak co-founder of Apple computers has launched Woz-U a tech education platform. It is designed to promote technical skills and talents. It is focused on both students and companies which will eventually hire those students.Over time, Wozniak hopes to expand the initiative to include as many as 30 physical locations around the world and courses on everything from software engineering and information technology to mobile app development and cybersecurity, among others. They specialize in technology and career-based programs designed to get people into the workforce quickly and affordable. Woz U is passionate about inspiring the next generation of innovators and developing the workforce of the future. It’s unclear whether courses will be offered for free, or whether Woz U plans on charging for any element of the online education platform. The website does not say. At launch, the curriculum will center around computer support specialists and software developers, with courses on data science, mobile applications, and cybersecurity coming in the future. Woz U is considered part of Southern Careers Institute (SCI) and will continue to partner with other colleges and institutions as we grow. Led by higher education experts, students will learn the skills necessary to take flight within the technology industry and receive a certificate of completion upon graduation.

Alongside the education platform, Woz U will also offer platforms for tech companies to recruit, train and retain their workforce through on-site customized programs and subscription-based curricula. There also will be a platform for K-12 students, which will be distributed to school districts, that will offer STEAM programs to identify talent and nudge those individuals into a tech-based career. Wozniak said that "Our goal is to educate and train people in employable digital skills without putting them into years of debt,” Wozniak said in a statement. “People often are afraid to choose a technology-based career because they think they can’t do it. I know they can, and I want to show them how. My entire life I have worked to build, develop, and create a better world through technology and I have always respected education. Now is the time for Woz U, and we are only getting started". Students will have 24/7 access to online programs with live access to instructors and mentors, high-quality video-based curriculum, and comprehensive career services. Their online program offers flexibility for those currently working full-time, traveling or simply in need of a more adaptive approach to learning. There is, however, already a mobile app out with some introductory courses, and you can also “enroll” in Woz U.
